 Attacking Autonomous Systems

Autonomous systems such as self driving cars, drones, and robotics rely heavily on AI models to perceive the environment and make real time decisions. These systems combine inputs from cameras, sensors, and control algorithms, which creates a large and complex attack surface. Any weakness in perception, decision making, or control can be exploited by attackers.

One major concern is the "self driving AI attack surface". Autonomous vehicles depend on multiple components including computer vision models, sensor fusion systems, navigation algorithms, and control mechanisms. If an attacker targets any of these components, they can influence how the system behaves. For example, manipulating perception inputs can lead to incorrect decisions such as misinterpreting road signs or failing to detect obstacles. Because these systems operate in real world environments, even small errors can have serious consequences.

Another important threat is "sensor manipulation attacks". Autonomous systems rely on sensors like cameras, LiDAR, radar, and GPS to understand their surroundings. Attackers can manipulate these sensors by introducing misleading signals. For instance, shining specific light patterns, spoofing GPS signals, or interfering with sensor readings can cause the system to misinterpret its environment. This can lead to incorrect navigation decisions or unsafe actions.

 AI Security for Computer Vision Systems

Computer vision systems are widely used in surveillance, autonomous driving, facial recognition, and industrial automation. These systems rely on deep learning models to detect and classify objects in images and videos. However, they are highly sensitive to adversarial manipulation.

One common attack is "object detection attacks". In these attacks, adversaries modify visual inputs so that the model fails to detect objects or misclassifies them. For example, a stop sign may be altered in a way that causes the model to ignore it or classify it as a different sign. These attacks can be performed digitally or physically, making them practical in real world scenarios.

Another powerful technique is the use of "adversarial patches". These are specially designed patterns or stickers that can be placed within an image or physical environment to fool vision models. When the model sees the patch, it may focus on it and produce incorrect predictions. For example, placing an adversarial patch on an object can cause the system to misidentify it entirely. These patches are particularly dangerous because they work across different environments and viewing conditions.

Securing autonomous and vision based AI systems requires robust model design, sensor validation, redundancy in perception systems, and continuous testing against adversarial scenarios. Since these systems interact directly with the physical world, their security is critical for safety and reliability.
